30A Final Reflection

1. One of my favorite assignments in this course was the elevator pitch. Not only is this assignment useful but it was really fun to do. I had a couple of great laughs while filming it and like to look back at my videos and laugh at them and see how much I have improved. One assignment that I look back at that I was not a big fan of was one of the earlier post was Identifying local Opportunities. I dreaded and underestimated the time it would take to this assignment and decided t complete an hour before it was due. It was mostly my mistake.

2. The most formative experience for me was the elevator pitch. The whole assignment will always stick with me because it is one of the first step in making believe in my very own product. It allowed me to develop and identify the opportunities my product gives to my potential consumers.

3. Although I believe there is always room for growing I do believe that I have develop an entrepreneurial mindset at this point. I feel like I was not always creative but this class has made me think out of the box and push my creativity.

4. One recommendation I would have for the students taking this class in the future would be to don't limit yourself and just go for it and you will be surprised on how you learn. Don't be embarrassed and you'll realize how much opportunity you'll have in this class. As long as you watch the lectures and take notes, and most importantly take time in completing the assignments you will do great in the class. I have personally made the mistake of waiting last minute to do an assignment and had to learn the hard way. To foster that mindset go to class and surround yourself with peers who have the same goals as you to become a better entrepreneur.

Business & Entrepreneurship Pathway – Pathways: Engineering ...

29A Venture Concept No.2

Opportunity:

The people who have this need are the people who struggle to manage their time and are constantly on the go. Specifically with students. Having to go to school full-time and having a job can get a bit stressful. They struggle to decide how to prioritize their health when the only free time they have is for studying. This product would be targeted to potential consumers throughout America, specifically in college towns, and in the age range of 18-30 years old. Students who have a hard time fitting working out into their daily routines because they are so busy are my main targets

Because I am a student myself, I do believe this an ongoing issue that students are experiencing. My potential customers are the ones who have a busy school life and want to fit a workout session in their daily routines. I don’t believe there is a product out there that is the solution to student’s problems. The closest competitor could be Peloton but they focus more on a live workout class from home rather than reading your books while you work out.

Students are not satisfied with their current health and workout routines. That is why the freshman 15 exists. Anyone who wants to even do a calm walk while reading or run at any pace will realize how efficient my product is. It is a very big opportunity that I believe can potentially expand to more exercising machines in the future. The market is centered around college towns and big cities that are constantly on the go.

Innovation:

My innovation is a treadmill that comes with a smart tablet that allows you to read or study note cards while you run at the pace you want to run at. You will be able to download your documents onto the tablet and set the pace of how fast you want the screen to move so that you’re not having to touch the screen as you workout. The line you are reading will be highlighted so you don’t lose track of where you are reading. You will also have the application Quizlet on the tablet if you want to practice your memorization on your note cards. The way I would make money would be to reach out to student complexes and schools and sell a set of three treadmills at the price of $6,000. I would also include a small amount of advertising by reaching out to businesses that are school-related like studying resources.

Three Minor elements:

1. By being a student myself, I will have a huge advantage of knowing what the customer wants or doesn’t. I will have continuous improvements in my product and will be expanding my product that no other company will meet.
2. My next opportunity with my product is to be able to incorporate businesses that have study packets like Smokin’ Notes or Study edge into my smart tablet and merging the tools students currently use with my treadmill.
3. I want to devote my time to expanding. I want my product to become a huge business where it expands into different products. I can also eventually open doors for myself that can give me opportunities to do other businesses related to my product like designing an athletic wear line.

Summarize Feedback:
Overall the feedback I received from my first venture was pretty positive. Although I did have a few suggestions to improve my explanation on how my product exactly works when it comes to the screen moving with your eyes when you run faster. Another suggestion was how exactly will I be making profit.

How did I change my venture concept:
Due to the great feedback I received in my first venture concept, I made a few adjustments in this post by explaining my throughly on how my screen works with my product. I was more descriptive with my numbers too on how much profit I would be receiving for each unit I sold.

28A Your Exit Strategy

1) What I intend to do with my business is to sell it in the next five years.

2) I decided to sell it and get a large return in order to invest it in something else that can have more profit and something I am more passionate about. I think my product is a product that can only evolve and grow so much that it would not be a product that will be as successful in the long run. Technology is always growing and I believe a whole new product by then will take over, therefore, I decided to use the money I get from selling my business and using it to create a product that meets consumer's needs and something I am passionate about.

3) I think my exit strategy is going to help me plan for new opportunities that are better for the market and more profitable. This all influences how I will use future resources and opportunities and help me potentially create a better innovative product.

27A Reading Reflection No. 3

Book: How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win

1) The theme of this book is to have a selfish approach. Scott has created a formula for priorities and emphasized the importance of prioritizing yourself by exercising and eating right, looking out for your economics, and then looking out for all other things like your family.

2) I believe this book connects with this class by how Scott Adams has given life long lessons and formula of priorities that helps us see the truth of what our failures are really about and what to learn from them. Because of this, it has helped me learn, improve and grow with the product I have created.

3) Based on this book, I would create an exercise that would require you to make a list of future goals, personal ones, business ones, and family ones. After that, I would require them to explain how they would achieve these goals and the time frame they give themself to complete it.

4) The biggest surprise to me while reading this book is to not wish for success but pursue it effectively. That although success has a price, you have the choice of the route you take. If you pick the right system then the price is closer to what you are willing to pay.

26A Celebrating Failure

1) This past semester has been a very weird one for me but overall it was a good one. I did though have a couple of failures that I had to learn from. One of them being when I did not do too well on my first Marketing exam. I learned from then I did not study enough and I also did not take advantage of the resources I had available to me. Fast forward to me taking my second exam, I did a lot better and I was very happy with my grade. This time I took advantage of my resources and studied a good amount before the exam. Now I am currently studying for my third and the last exam for the last class and I hope this one is not a failure.

2) I learned from this experience that you can't concentrate too much on the negative but instead focus on how to improve and what you have learned from the experience. I was first sad and upset but I realized there was not much more to do but to just focus on what I can do for next time so I would not fail again.

3) I believe everyone can have a moment of sadness or frustration after failing at something but you should just believe that this is just a step closer to succeeding and figuring out a step closer to how to improve. I handle failure by looking back at what I did and being honest with myself on what I could have done to have had a better outcome. I believe before this class I was less likely to take a risk that could possibly fail because I thought why would I do that to myself. Now I understand how entrepreneurs fail all the time and maybe that slight possibility of being can successful can change your whole life. So yes, now I definitely feel like I am more likely to take a risk because who cares! If it fails then I will just keep trying.

25A What's Next?

Existing Market

Step 1: I would like to incorporate study businesses like Smokin' Notes and Study edge as an application on my tablet. This would help customers use the tools they are already using and merge them with their exercise.

Step 2: In terms of what I believe customers would want to be added to the product, I believe that they would want more study tools applications that are already on the tablet and maybe even have read out loud tools that the tablet reads your notes to you.

Step 3: I think the first step I need to take is to reach out to study businesses and see if they would be interested in merging with my product. This would help me out and give my customers a new tool to use. I can then begin to work on what would be an efficient way for the tools to work and how the customers will actually be retaining the information while they run. Another step is to advertise to our customers throughout the schools and the study tools they already use. I will also be incorporating subliminal advertisements. This can help me financially with start my company. My product also has to be unique from other competitors, I want to focus on my customer's experience. My product must continue to be unique by creating a great customer experience that my customers would want to go back to.

New Market

Step 1: My next target would be for older people. This could be hard because the older you get the more responsibilities you have. Because of this, with time people learn how to organize and time manage. If I could learn how to make it less study mode and more just simple reading while they run this can be a successful product.

Step 2: I think that I would be able to create value for this market because although the older you get sometimes comes with more responsibilities, like having a family. A lot of the time adults want to escape and use working out as a stress reliever but I can create a product that can be more soothing and not for such an intense workout and just read one of your favorite books. This can make my customers feel as they're escaping for a bit.

Step 3: I think the interviewees would say that if I were able to create a screen that moves with your head and will make it easier to read their books and even though the line they are reading can be highlighted it will make it easier if they are running faster to have the screen move with them.

Step 4: Prior to this new market I really didn't think that I would be able to come up with a way to get older adults to use my product. I believed that they did not believe in the high technology and just wanted toe scape from the stress they have. I also believed that there were other products that are treadmills and had the option to read a book on their tablet.

After doing this assignment, I do feel more confident, although I am not sure about how successful or easy it will be making my product unique to this market. I believe my existing market is more attractive to the new one although, I did get great pointers on the new market that I can add to my existing one.

24A Venture Concept No.1

Product Name: Track and Go

Opportunity:

The people who have this need are the people who struggle to manage their time and are constantly on the go. Specifically with students. Venture Concept:

This is a huge opportunity to help students get organized and manage their time. Students will be able to study and workout at the same time and not feel like they have to prioritize their school over their health. Students are new to managing so many things at one time and my product will make their life easier and less stressful. People will switch to my product because of how simple and efficient it is to use my product. People are looking for ways and things that can make their life easier. I also don’t believe it will be difficult for people to switch to my product because there is no product like mine. Students are on a budget and if my product can be provided by their school or complex it would be ideal for them. The competitors of my product would be Peloton.

Three Minor elements:

1. By being a student myself, I will have a huge advantage of knowing what the customer wants or doesn’t. I will have continuous improvements in my product and will be expanding my product that no other company will meet.

22A Elevator Pitch No.3

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8swrQhtukvo&feature=youtu.be

Reflection:
What stood out as important to me was my stuttering in the last pitch and the feedback that surprised me the most was the volume of my voice. I believe the feedback that was silly was my head movements. I realized sometimes when I talk and I want to emphasize something I will emphasize it with my head and not just my hands.

What did I change?
I have definitely memorized my pitch more since the first take I did of my pitch. But most importantly I believe I am a lot more comfortable in front of the camera than I was in the beginning. I would stutter a lot more before. I also believe my pitch has overall improved with me adding more information and statistics about my product.

21A Reading Reflection No.2

Book: The Art of Social Media: Power Tips for Power Users by Guy Kawasaki

Theme:
The general theme of this book is on how social media presence should be focused on your business to get the most recognition out of your brand.

Connecting:I believe this book connected and enhanced what I am learning in ENT3003 because the book was able to teach me on how to manage and treat my social media in order to obtain the most use and recognition for my brand. I believe that this book is a book everyone should read because nowadays social media is the number one way to promote your business and products. This class is about how to create and how to further proceed with your product and using social media is one of the first steps in order to get your business known.

Exercise:
If I had to design an exercise based on this book I would suggest students to create a social media page and promote and talk about their product. This would be kind of like what we do in the blogger post. Every person in their group would follow each other on the social media page and be able to comment and provide feedback. To follow that, I would also suggest that they would answer questions like how they think their social media standing has improved throughout the semester.

Best Surprise:
The thing I was surprised most when reading the book was how certain social media like blogging was so successful and a great way to engage buyers and fans to your brand. I never really thought about blogging is a way to connect with fans but I can now realize that maybe older people in the age range of 30 years old and up can be interested in this. I am saying this because I am not aware of any younger people who read blogs. I believe it could be because younger people are more interested in videos that are posted on YouTube. But blogging can be a great way to promote and interact with your consumers.

20A Growing Your Social Capital

1)
Anthony H.
He is someone I found that specializes in technical support in tablets. He has software development and technical support experience for about 8 years. He focuses on repairing and creating faster tools.
2)
Domain Expert
He is a domain expert because he will be able to help me and guide me with the technology development of the tablet to work with the treadmill.
3)
I actually grew up with him and found him again on his Instagram page. I have contacted him by sending him a DM through Instagram.
4)
He is giving me an insight into how I could create this product and any possible negative outcomes. The return expectation is I will gain better knowledge on the possible negative outcomes and having to take that into consideration.
5)
Including Anthony will help me progress my product making sure it is good to go when I want to put in on the market.

1)
I actually contacted the business Peloton. They are a business that has a very similar product as mine. They provide treadmills and bikes with Live classes on smart tablets.
2)
Market Expert
This business has very similar products to mine. They have the same concept in merging technology with their workouts.
3)
I went on their website and was able to email them asking them if there were any pointers or things I should look for when creating my product.
4)
They are helping me with what people have suggested to them in order to improve their product and because they know these people the best. The return expectation is to provide a better service to my potential consumers.
5)
They will help me exploit this opportunity by helping me better understand the customers and their needs when using my product.

1)
I reached out to Apple Inc because they have and are known to have the best smart tablets.
2)
Supplier
I reached out to Apple because they are known for the best smartphones and tablets and I believe their tablets would work perfectly with my treadmill products. Without the tablet, my product will not be able to complete what I intend for it to do.
3)
I contacted them via Twitter by going on their page and reaching out to them.
4)
I sent them my elevator pitch and the intentions of my product and in return of exchange, I hope that they will give me pointers on how to make my product more unique and stand out from other products.
5)
Apple is so big and known across the world that I am hoping to gain knowledge from them and potentially have a relationship with them.

Reflect
This networking experience is very different from any experience that I have had in the past. Due to it all being online. The networking experiences I have had in the past have all been in person. One of them being at the job fair at school or going to close by events. I also have never presented my elevator pitch so that is an experience that I am going to use in the future and improve on. Overall, I thought this experience was unique and helpful for my future.

19A Idea Napkin No.2

1)You
I am a senior at the University of Florida. I have always been a great listener and being patient. I believe these skills were able to improve last summer during my internship and understanding the customer's frustration. My aspirations for my business concept is to help people reduce their stress. I want to expand across the nation and create stability in my life and hopefully, expand into other products and not just focus on treadmills.

2)What are you offering to customers?
My product will allow them to not feel pressured to choose working out over school or any business-related reading they might have to do. This product will reduce stress and allow them to improve their time management skills. By being able to combine their readings with a workout they will feel better about themselves and reduce their stress levels.

3)Who are you offering it to?
I am offering it to businesses, schools, and any apartment complex who have potential customers that require to do a lot of reading but are concern with staying healthy. This product will e for younger customers that are around the ages of 18-32.

4)Why Do they Care?
They care because I believe no more than ever people are constantly making sure they feel and look good. Not only that, but people have a hectic schedule and want to be able to prioritize both. People at this age are dealing with multiple things at once and this product will help reduce the stress and make sure you are staying fit.

5)What are your Core Competencies?
What makes my product special is that other treadmills don't allow a smart tablet on it that goes at the pace you set it at. This tablet follows your speed and is easy to use. This is a tablet that can also read for you so you can listen while you run.

I believe that all of my elements are strong together when it comes to my product. Each one of them reflects each other very nicely which gives me hope that my product can be successful. My only concern and weak aspect I believe I have are when it comes down to the numbers. That is something I have to do more research about.

Feedback Memo
The two things I took away from my feedback was the way I was able to create a solution for a problem a lot of students, in particular, may have. It was a special thing to be able to take their concerns and possibly create a solution for it. Because of this, it also proved that I am a great listener and this is something that people appreciated.

17A Elevator Pitch No.2

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lLYek4L4hNw

Reflection:

My feedback I received was helpful and expected. I have never been really good at presenting an idea of mine so this activity definitely helped me a lot. What was most useful to me was the fact that I did not add enough statistics to prove how effective my product could be. After reading the feedback I realized I needed to better memorize my pitch and add more stats on how my product can work for people.
Based on my feedback I added more statistics on how many americans don't make time to talk and took out who I was in the beginning because it was unnecessary. Although I do believe I can improve my stuttering and hopefully by the end of this my last pitch will be flawless!

18A Create a Customer Avatar

My Avatar:

My customer is someone who is very busy. They are constantly on the go and trying to fit everything into their schedule. They always have a million things going through their head. Their age is from 21-35 because people around this age are usually working, going to school, and trying to be fit. They drive a black SUV Lexus vehicle and when they have free time they enjoy to watch Netflix and catch up on their shows like Friends or How to get Away with Murder. They don't have any children and is not married. They live in a hectic city and want to focus on themselves and their career before getting married and starting a family. They want to feel young and look young. Overall, my customer is young active, and on the go.

What I have in common with my customer:
I believe I do have several things in common with my costumer. I am constantly busy and struggling to make sure I can get everything done. I know I am young but I want to make sure that I am looking young as well. I don't believe this is a coincidence because I am a young person who wants to succeed in life and look good just like any other young adult.

16A What's your secret sauce?

Five ways I believe I have human capital that is unique is
  1. I have an open mindset and although I do hold very strong opinions I always want to hear another person opinion and be open
  2. I am a very observant person and always looking at how people do certain things
  3. I am also determined and goal-driven. Any time a friend of mine has a problem I am always looking for a solution to fix it.
  4. I am very social. I always make conversation with anyone at any time. I love to ask questions. I am able to easily build relationships.
  5. I am also very confident. Although like anyone there is always going to be insecurities. I always try to look past them and present myself as a confident person because I believe my energy can be passed on to another person and hope they can be confident too.
  • In the first interview, my friend said I had great social skills and know-how to build a relationship. I am able to listen and communicate with others that also allow me to solve any issues because I am able to ton understand their problems.
  • In my second interview, my friend expressed how I am able to solve a problem without freaking out. She is impressed that I can be so calm in a situation and resolve the issue.
  • In my third interview, my sister described that I could be emotional at times but that it comes from having to want something so bad and being goal-driven.
  • In my fourth interview, (excuse the horrible background noise) my mom expressed that I am a very social person and always making conversation. I always listen to someone and love to hear feedback.
  • In my fifth and last interview, my friend described me as a patient loyal friend. I am always listening to people's problems and solving my own problems with grace and being calm.
I believe overall my interview is correct about me. I would add that I am a very patient and nonstressful person. I believe that in my interviews most of my friends expressed that when I am faced with a challenge I will solve it calmly because I don't see the need to stress about something when I know there is a way to solve it if I just sit down and really think about what I can change or not. Overall, it was nice to hear these things about me from other people's perspectives.

15A Figuring Out Buyers No.2

Interview #1

The first interview I conducted was with one of my other roommates. We started off by discussing her time management and how it is a concern for her that she feels like she is unable to fit a healthy active lifestyle with her school work. She mentioned that although my product sounds very nice, for a college student it is not very realistic. The machine would be too expensive for her to buy herself unless the machine was provided to her in her complex or school. Their first solution would be just to learn how to organize herself, whether that means having to wake up early to go to the gym. If they were to purchase this item she would have to finance my product because it is realistically outside of student's budget. She controls her money very well and doesn't make a purchase unless eh for sure knows she will use it or if it is even worth her money. I believe overall after discussing with her about my product that my product will realistically not be suited for her because of how high the price is.

Interview #2

This person I interviewed is a person who is very active and makes sure to exercise at least four times a week. He is on the volleyball club team at school. He discusses how being active is important to him and how like any student he, of course, gets stress with school sometimes but doesn't necessarily have time management issues. His solution is to join a club or some activity where you kind of feel obligated to go and so that way you have to find a way to fit it into your schedule. Again, he mentioned if he were to purchase my product that he would have to for sure finance it but would not necessarily purchase it because when he is working out he does not like to combine school with it as he expresses this is where he has fun and releases stress. I then continued to ask if he would ask for his parent's help in financing it but said that at this point the only thing his parents helps him out is for rent but everything else he has to ay himself and so no they would not help out with paying for this product. He also expressed he would purchase it because he believes there are better and cheaper ways for a college student to work out and still be able to study.

Interview #3

This person I interviewed is a friend and neighbor of mine. She expresses to me that she is always online shopping and looking for a new product that will make her look fit or be fit. She expresses that like any other student she is stressed with school but is just generally a lazy person when it comes to working out. She thought the idea was cool and can potentially work out for her. She does not like the idea of running but fast walking and reading her book is ideal for her. She would consult with her parents about financing my product and would like to not have it here with her but back at her parent's house so when she goes back home on the weekend or for breaks she is able to keep up with her studies and work out. Her solution would be to actually go to do the gym but struggles to find the motivation. She also mentioned that to her it's important the guarantee the product gives her. She really isn't too concerned with the price as long as the product is worth it to her.

In conclusion, I learned that my product would be catered to schools and businesses more than individuals. I understood that realistically students are not going to be able to afford my product. This is a big purchase that people usually look online more than in person.

14A Halfway Reflection

1. I have for sure developed the behavior of looking at the assignments before so I can time manage myself. I made the mistake earlier this semester of not looking at the assignments in advance, which one time led me to not having enough time because I underestimated how long it would take me to do it.

2. A moment I felt like giving up was when I underestimated the amount of time it would take to complete three assignments I had left for last-minute and to top it off as I was in a rush to finish it the electricity of my building went out for a couple of hours. I took that as a lesson for not reading the assignments in advance even though the electricity going out in my building wasn't any help. I felt like I kept a firm attitude this semester of the organization. It made me feel so stupid not being able to complete the assignment so I now organize my time.

3. Three tips:
- Make sure to keep up with the assignments so you are not left behind and are able to create a great business idea.
- Take notes! This will help you a lot when it comes to the cupcake assignments.
- Don't doubt your business idea. You will be surprised how many people actually believe in it.

13A Reading Reflection No.1

Book: Mary Kay Ash

What surprised me the most:
After reading the book, a couple of things surprised me but there were some particular things that really surprised me about it. First being her determination and passion she had. Although people like her accountant had told her the business she was creating would fail she proceeded to build her business. Not to mention the age she had started her company.

What did I most admire:
I admire her determination and her consistency with life. She never gave up even if there were bumps on the road and always managed to give back to her community. She never gave up and continued to move forward with creating a prosperous company.

What did I least admire:
I don't believe there are things I don't admire about Mary Kay. But I do believe she shouldn't allow people that pull you down like her accountant into her life. I feel as if maybe her allowing people like that into your life is like allowing this negativity into the process of creating your own business. You never know and people can have bad intentions and not want you to succeed.

Did the entrepreneur encounter adversity and failure?
Mary Kay did encounter adversity. her being a female caused her not to receive promotions that a male would have received. She struggled with numerous financial challenges but pushed through every single one and even with the unfair challenges she pushed through making her business successful.

What competencies did I notice the entrepreneur exhibited?
She had great mature social skills. This allowed her to create relationships that assisted her in making sure her business grew. She was also able to time manage her busy schedule and somehow run a successful business.

One part of the reading that was confusing:
A part that was confusing to me was when she would appear then disappear in a part of the reading.

If you were able to ask two questions to the entrepreneur, what would you ask? Why?
1. I feel as if time management is a thing I currently struggle with and I am not even attempting to open my own business now. So how are you able to organize everything that is going on in your life while running a successful business? This can help me to organize myself and learn how to take on more tasks without overwhelming myself.
2. With your lawyer and accountant expressing their doubts and opinions with you about your company not being successful, how did you manage to push forward without letting that affect you?
I would ask this question because I believe there are always going to be people who don't find the need for your product or business and you just need to not let that affect you because if you believe there is someone out there who would and you are confident then it shouldn't stop you.

For fun: what do you think the entrepreneur's opinion was of hard work? Do you share that opinion?
Mary Kay's opinion of hard work is to be successful. She was great at time managing and this gave her the advantage of preparing herself ahead of time. She was constantly moving from place to place to accomplish her goal of making her business successful. Even with her pushing, I am sure that there were times that she felt exhausted but kept going.
